As autumn chill creeps in, I feel a certain reluctance to pull out my winter clothes. It’s just a little cool now, I think to myself. It’ll be hot again by lunch. That doesn’t change the fact that I spend part of the day shivering… and so of course the practical solution is layers.
Violets is a simple top-down cardigan worked all in one piece. The wide, open neck and short, gently gathered sleeves add a little bit of style to a classic that will add a little warmth to your wardrobe.

• Lion Brand Amazing [53% Wool, 47% Acrylic; 147yd/135m per 50g/1.75oz skein]; color: Violets; 4 skeins
• J/6.00mm hook
• 1 – 7/8″ button

Row 1: Ch 82 (98), sk 2, hdc across. (80, 96 hdc) Turn.

Row 15: Ch 2, sk 1 st, sc in next st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Turn.

Row 16: Ch 1, sc in sc, sc in ch-sp, *ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in ch-sp. Rep from * across, making 1 sc in ch-2 at beginning of row 15. Turn.

Row 17: Ch 1, sc in first sc. *Ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in ch-sp. Repeat from * across, sc in last sc. Turn.

Row 18: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ch-sp. *Ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in ch-sp. Repeat from * across, sc in last sc. Turn.

Repeat Rows 17 and 18 for patt. until piece measures 13″ or desired length from neck edge.

Edging:

Row 1: (Turn work 90 degrees and work up end of rows towards neck.) Ch 2. Evenly space hdc up to neck edge. Place 3 hdc to turn corner. Hdc evenly across neck. Place 3 hdc to turn corner. Hdc down other side, make 3 hdc to turn corner. Hdc across bottom, join to beginning ch-2.

Row 2: Ch 2. Hdc in each hdc up to neck edge; ch 1 to form buttonhole. Place hdc 3 to turn corner. [Hdc dec, hdc 2] across neck edge, hdc 3 to turn corner, hdc down other side. Finish off.

Sleeves (repeat for both):

Rnd 1: Leaving a tail of yarn (to sew up gap in rounds), join at underarm. Ch 2. *Hdc dec, hdc 8 (10). Rep from * around. (36, 44 hdc) Join.

Rnd 2: Ch 2. *Hdc dec, hdc 7 (9). Rep from * around. (32, 40 hdc) Join.

Rnd 3: Ch 2. *Hdc dec, hdc 6 (8). Rep from * around. (28, 36 hdc) Join.

Rnd 4: Ch 2. *Hdc dec, hdc 5 (7). Rep from* around. (24, 32 hdc) Join.

Rnd 5: Ch 2. *Hdc dec, hdc 4 (6). Rep from * around. (20, 28 hdc) Join.

Rnd 6-7: Ch 1, sc around. Join rnd.

Finish off.

Finishing: Sew closed gap at underarm. Sew button to neck edge opposite buttonhole. Weave in all ends.
