I love to design things that look more difficult than they actually are. I want something that is easy to do, but gives me more “bang for my buck,” so to speak. I don’t have many hours in the day to accomplish this endeavor, so I try to make the most of it.

Way back in the dark ages (I worked graveyard shifts then, it was dark!), when I taught myself to knit, I did it for exactly one reason: I was under the impression that it was impossible to crochet cables. I love cables. Unreasonably so, even. So when I discovered that it is in fact possible to crochet a cable, I was in hog heaven.

Who can say no to sunshine and rainbows? This pair of soft little plushies are the perfect size for small fingers to grab and snuggle, and they do double duty as bright decorations for a child’s room.

The simple shapes of these stuffed creations work up quickly, and their rainbow of bright colors will have a smile on your face while they do.

I just love shrugs! They’re usually quick to make (which appeals to my short project attention span), they don’t use very much yarn (which appeals to my frugality and makes use of my habit of picking up stray balls of yarn) and more than anything else you can make with such a small amount of supplies, it feels like clothes.

I bought the yarn used in this cowl years ago. I love the colors of forests and fall, and this brown, tan, and green colorway seemed like it would quickly turn into something wonderful. There was just one problem: I hated everything I tried to make with it. I swatched and swatched and swatched again, but it seemed that no matter what stitch or pattern I tried, the colors fought with it – and so the yarn got frogged (yet again) and sent to the closet.

Every now and again I feel like I’ve seen all there is to see in the land of crocheted hats. Despite everything you can do with color and stitch patterns, there are only so many shapes something can be and still go on your head.

Imagine my delight when I stumbled on a variation on the theme of ‘hat’ that was new to me. Geez Louise is a cross somewhere between a cloche, a watch cap, and a turban, with loads of feminine attitude and an attractive stitch pattern to boot. The gathered part can be worn to the front, to the side, or in between to allow you to change up your look even more.
